Pet Laser Therapy Reduces Pain and Speeds Healing
Pet laser therapy is a relatively new treatment in veterinary medicine, although it has been used in human medicine for many years. It is a non-invasive, drug-free option for pain control that has zero negative side effects. At Chester County Cat Hospital, we’re pleased to deliver this innovative pain management option to cats of Chester County.
How Does Laser Therapy Work?
Laser therapy, also known as cold laser therapy and low-level laser therapy, is performed with a hand-held device that our trained technicians hold above your pet’s trouble area. The laser emits a specific frequency of laser light that penetrates deep into the tissue where it stimulates natural healing effects. A therapeutic laser:
Decreases pain by stimulating the body’s natural pain killers
Reduces inflammation by increasing blood circulation and countering fluid build-up
Accelerates healing by energizing cells to repair damaged tissue
The General Treatment Timeline
Your veterinarian will develop a therapeutic laser treatment plan for your individual pet based on their condition. Generally, for acute conditions, one to three treatments are all that’s needed to see positive effects. Meanwhile, chronic conditions such as arthritis often required longer treatment plans that involve one to two session per week for several weeks. Once we see some improvement in their condition, we will be able to taper off treatment to once every two weeks, then once a month and so on.
